Deacon 73-76, Wildflowers, Grouse

It's month #19 and only two more to go :)

The final blocks close in on the middle rows.

Original attributed to Letitia B. Hale

#73 had a large empty space in the center so I added a stamp.

#74. This original block is attributed to Aunt Ann Reeves / Mount Holly / 1842. It is so pretty and delicate-looking . . .  (Sentimental Stitches photo)

. . .  but I had trouble finding the right fabric to duplicate that look so went off in an entirely different direction. I cut these motifs from an older repro by Karen Jarrar for Marcus Brothers and machine zig-zagged the edges.

#75 may become my favorite :)

Original attributed to Elias Buzby / 1842

#76. I always welcome a pieced block thinking it will take less time to make. Most times that's true but what appears to be simple can take a lot longer than expected :)

It's the beginning of wildflower season!

Colts Foot

Hepatica

My daughter and I were out early this morning and photographed this patch of Dutchman's Breeches on top of a rock slab. So beautiful!

On our way home I had to get out of the car to shoo this grouse out of the road. It just didn't want to move.

Have a wonderful week!

  2. They are all beautiful, but #75 blows me away!! You are closing in--so exciting!
And I love seeing the wildflowers. Haven't been out on any hikes yet myself this year, so I will enjoy the early spring flowers through you.

  3. This months blocks are wonderful. (As usual 😉) It's interesting how a pieced block can look so easy and then be so time consuming. I love those little Dutchmen Britches. I haven't seen them in person for years.

  5. Barbara - I have been enjoying your journey through the blocksof the Deacon quilt. Your work is just beautiful. Block #73 caught my eye as I have been fascinated by the stamps used in older quilts. I didn't think they were available any longer and would love to acquire one. Can you share where you obtained yours? Thanks you so much

    1. Thank you, Kathy! I'm not familiar with any new stamps either. The one I have is SS2 Susan McKelvey by Jukebox and it must be at least 15 years old. I find her books to be helpful too: Friendship's Offering and Scrolls & Banners to Trace.
