First Rescue: A doll bed with bedding
I was outside the thrift shop when a woman came to drop off a doll bed. I approached her about it and after a few minutes "we" decided to ask the person in charge of receiving. I thought I could purchase it then and there but was told she needed to do some research and for me to come back on Saturday.
So I went back and I didn't see it anywhere. It turns out a neighbor, a thrift shop volunteer, had overheard my conversation and put the bed in the back of the shop. When she went to retrieve it ALL THE BEDDING had been tossed in the dumpster.

My neighbor then offered to retrieve the bedding from the dumpster! So when I was at checkout she came with a bag and told the cashier not to charge me anything--that it was "garbage."
When I got home I threw all the bedding in the tub. I must admit there was some mold on the items. This little quilt was the best of all. Only a minor stain or two on the back. But it is hand-pieced-and-quilted.
This one showed signs of wear and tear but it is so sweet. Some of the faded fabrics are conversationals.
And this is the mattress. All original and after multiple washings, airing-outs, and tumbles in the dryer, it is somewhat clean. If I only knew the woman's name who brought this treasure to the thrift shop, I would tell her that her mother's doll bed and quilts have found a new home with someone who loves quilts.
Second Rescue: "Loon Rescue"
Guess where I was? At another thrift shop where I found this appliqued loon for 50-cents. It was on a 12" square of fabric and signed by the maker: "Carolyn Panzini Moody 1999". I ended up cutting down the background and framing the loon with a black print and William Morris fabrics. This little piece was actually in an exhibit two weeks ago:-) FYI actual Loon rescues in our area are always "newsworthy."
Third Rescue: 1840s Oak Leaf & Reel
I can't wait to tell you about this stunning 1840s quilt!
