Dear Daughter and More

I started making Dear Daughter blocks over a year ago and decided it was time to put them all together and finish the top. Why? Read on . . .

These are some of the blocks that were being offered by Gay at Sentimental Stitches. I focused on the ones that were signed by New Jersey quiltmakers in 1852.

The four that I featured in the center were the most difficult to applique but I found those birds to be absolutely charming. They make me smile.

There is only one pieced block and that is the one in the upper center.

Many of the original blocks were made by members of the Dunham family in Piscataway, NJ, like the one on the lower left . . .

. . . and the quirky floral bud stem above.

We arrived at the cabin yesterday afternoon and I brought my Dutch Panel quilt to work on.

I'll do simple cross-hatch quilting on the entire piece . . .

. . .  and outline the large rosette and quilt in and around each small hexie. It's moving right along.

The leaves are turning and we saw some pretty spectacular colors once we got off the Adirondack Northway. This is our everyday view :)

We're babysitting our granddog for the next 10 days. She is such a sweetheart!

So here's the real reason for assembling the Dear Daughter top . . .

I'm ready to join in on the fun of reproducing another NJ quilt--the Ella Maria Deacon quilt that was made in Mt. Holly NJ in 1842. And once again Sentimental Stitches is offering the patterns for ALL 85 of these blocks. Check out the first set here

More to come :)

Enjoy your week!

  1. Oh squeal!! I am so excited that you are doing the Ella Maria Deacon quilt! I made the commitment and then had second thoughts so I am happy that you will be stitching along with me. I just hope I can keep up. I adore your Dear Daughter quilt. I love the way you have set it also. The colors at your cabin are sensational and I hope you have a great time working on your beautiful Dutch panel quilt. Unfortunately we are leaving our peak color behind this weekend as we travel to Florida to see our son. Enjoy the color!

  2. Wow, that's quite an undertaking, but what a spectacular quilt. I love that you (and others) make these quilts, as it would be quite beyond me. Your view is so nice...

  3. Beautiful quilts in the making and the next one too! Enjoy the beautiful colors, we are just approaching peak colors in western New York near the PA border. The frost earlier this week should hurry things along now.

  4. Oh, my! Your newest challenge will be quite the undertaking. You may have stopped sooner than you planned for your Dear Daughter quilt, but it looks fabulous the size it is. It's funny how the one pieced block just mingles with all the applique. What a beautiful view from your cabin. My view out my window today includes about 2" of snow! I should be stitching, but....

  6. Dear Daughter looks really good. I like the border fabrics--great look!
The Dutch panel will be a beauty with all that hand quilting to polish it off.
What a beautiful view, and the colors are gorgeous. I took a drive through a nearby mountain canyon today, but it looks like I missed the peak colors there. It will probably hit the valley in the next week.
    Your next project is stunning!
