May Mini and Memorial Day

Three years ago . . .

. . . I put these patriotic pieces up on my design wall but they just weren't coming together.

Then a few weeks ago with Memorial Day in mind I took them out hoping that something would click the second time around.

I pieced the back by matching the motifs and top-stitching the seam . . .

. . . then quilted it from the back.

And this is what it looks like on the front.

I can't tell you how good it feels to finish this little piece! Thank you, Wendy, for your monthly mini inspiration!

This Memorial Day let us not forget Pvt Walter D. Carle who died of wounds in WWII. He was only 21 years old and is buried in Restland Memorial Park, E. Hanover, NJ.

Enjoy the holiday!

  1. Now that was a pretty sneaky plan, and it worked out perfectly!
There are lots of valiant soldiers (men and women) buried all around our country and even more in graves in France and other places, and certainly we want to remember them. Let's honor all of them in a special way tomorrow, Memorial Day! ---"Love"

Thank you for reminding us (me) the real meaning of Memorial Day.

  3. I am impressed with how well you made that work--and quilting from the back on this piece makes sense. It has given me inspiration for something I am attempting.
We owe so much to those who gave their lives for our freedom. We must never let it become something we take for granted.

  4. Perfect backing solution to your patriotic quilt. Today I worked on geneology as I've been doing every day since March 1, and today came across a few veterans. It's so important to be mindful of why we enjoy the freedoms we do.

  6. Love how you took all those pieces and made them work together. It's balanced with all those cute patriotic fabrics. I like your idea of top stitching the backing to make a perfect match. Great May mini.

  8. Oh, this could not be more perfect for Memorial Day! Sometimes things just need to ruminate before turning into something so special. Thanks for another great mini. And I hope we all thank Walter for his service and devotion to this nation.

  9. I have that tan fabric with the little flags and tiny stars... bought it around 1990, started a Desert Storm quilt at that time. Then I ran out of fabric. Hoping to get back to it some day, with some complimentary colors. So glad you finished yours.
