I finally finished Tumbler which I started in 2015 (not 2021 as originally posted--what was I thinking?)!

What took so long is that I ironed all the long horizontal seams open and I was not happy with the outcome. So it sat for years even though I had the backing. Just couldn't get motivated. You know what I mean??
I tackled this dilemma a few months ago and re-ironed all those seams so half faced up, the other half down. Ah, so much better!
I added a striped border and took the top and backing to Dawn at Cabin Creek Quilters to be longarm quilted. Here is the video she posted when the quilt was coming off her machine :)
I alternated light and dark fabrics and inserted some fun fabrics along the way.

And one of my favorite Lincoln pieces.
First, I put it on a bed just to take a good look . . .

. . . then up on my design wall. It's 56-1/2" x 58-1/2" and there are 391 pieces. Each tumbler is 2" and I used Darlene Zimmerman's Dresden ruler.
The back . . .
. . . and label. Ta-da!
This year's goal is to continue plugging away at UFOs--and I have at least a few more that are within reach of completion :)

Congratulations! Your Tumblers are a fantastic collection of so many fabrics. I understand your dilemma of putting it away. Granted, it took you a few years to muster the strength to tackle those seams, but you did. It's a beautiful finish!

ReplyDeleteOh, I really like this. Full of old-fashioned scrappy goodness. Look great on the bed. That is an awful lot of tiny tumblers, and the effect is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, I love this one too. Somewhere in my stash I too have a tumbler quilt started, rows sewn but not to each other. I've been trying to find the bin this is in so I can finish it. Obviously I am not supposed to do that one at this time, since I have no idea where it is! But I have plenty of other UFOs to make progress on in the meantime.

ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! The back is charming, and future generations will delight in finding those fun fabrics in the tumblers, too. I'm intrigued with the way you sewed your borders on. I've never seen this method before, but I like it very much.
ReplyDeleteHi Jay, thanks for stopping by! That's actually the first time I did a border that way. It's sort of done Log Cabiin-style and I like the way it swirls around the tumblers.
DeleteWow, so beautiful! I made a tumbler quilt...but it's about 10 x 10", haha! I love it and know that I would never make a full bed size one. A mini is enough for me. Yours is really amazing, love the backing! Jan in MA
