Monthly Mini Baggie Challenge

This month my mini is the result of a challenge posted by Janet O. (Rogue Quilter) who is a regular in Wendy's group of monthly mini makers. Thanks for pulling this together, Janet! Mind you, I don't sort my scraps and keep them in baggies like she does, but she graciously put together leftovers from prior projects and offered them to anyone who was interested. So, I jumped at the chance.

I immediately pulled this book (Little Handfuls of Scraps by Edyta Sitar) from my shelf to get some ideas.

And decided this was the quilt I wanted (to try) to make. Lots more pieces than what I usually choose for my minis but hey, why not?

I chose Janet's baggie of madders and blues for this little piece. There were lots of generous scraps enough for all the hsts, borders and binding.

We were allowed to add one neutral so that was the light part of the hsts and one other color which I used for the strips--an old Thimbleberries fabric from the TS.

The borders--2 madder and 2 blue--are 1-3/4" wide and each one is different. The most logical way, to me anyway, was to quilt it in vertical rows.

Ta-da! Thanks, Janet! Your baggie of scraps was perfect for this challenge! The finished piece is 15" x 18".

Be sure and stop by Wendy's blog the end of the month to see more minis and be inspired to make one of your own :) You can always join in on the fun!

On another note:

Don't laugh! I had donated this little quilt to the TS and last week I bought it back! Why? My daughter said she would like to give it to a co-worker who just had a baby boy so when I saw it was for sale with a $6.00 (!) price tag I picked it up and brought it home :)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

See you next week!

  1. What a fabulous mini! I'm so happy that Janet inspired us to do something with those little bits of leftovers. This one is simply gorgeous. I think I will go dig out my book and start dreaming. Thanks for another great mini! And, that is a funny story about your little donation. How could they only ask $6.00?!

  2. Wow! I love your challenge mini! Janet was so sweet to put together this little bit challenge. I also got a baggie from her. All of those different fabrics worked up perfectly in that design. Ha ha. Love your story of the donation quilt. Seems like quite the deal.

  4. I am tickled to see what you created, Barbara! I knew you would do something great with that baggie of scraps, but I never envisioned this. It is wonderful! That is a whole lot more little HSTs than I can usually bring myself to squeeze into a monthly mini. I am very impressed with the way you replicated the design and made those scraps play together so well. And I do like that border you added.
As to your buying back of your donation--been there, done that. Why not? You donated something, and it was purchased. Mission accomplished on both ends! ;)

  5. I love the colors of your little baggie quilt. Cheddar and blue and so comforting. Great little design!
I love your story of buying back your donation.
It is a win win for the shop. Do they support local charities or just help to re-use life's leftovers? either way, I love to shop them.

  7. Your mini is perfectly sweet, and thanks for sharing the pattern source. I may have to scout out a copy of Edyta's book after the holidays. Yes, for $6 you needed to snap up your own quilt!

  8. You did a great job with your mini, such a nice "handful of scraps" with the blue and madders. And I love how you treated the borders on your mini - the variety adds a lot of interest! Glad you bought back your little mini - $6??? Whoever priced it, is not a quilter, lol.

  10. Barbara, I love this mini! Yes that’s a lot of pieces and a lot of work! And you managed to get them to all line up perfectly! I’m tickled to see another TS fabric used as the sashing strips. Gotta love Thimblberries, they fit so well with the repros, you know? I have (and love)that book, but have yet to make a quilt from it. Must put that on my bucket list 🤔. How funny you bought your own donation quilt back! Sounds like something I would do.
